Flow restriction is essential for all reverse osmosis systems at the drain line to maintain a standard waste water flow, and it is recommended to replace the restrictor each time the membrane is being replaced. The restrictor must be sized according to the capacity of the membrane. Flow restrictors are crucial to the proper functioning of an RO system. Ensure that you have the appropriate flow restrictor for the membrane you have. If you decide to change your membrane to a higher or lower GPD membrane, you must also replace the flow restrictor to correspond with the membrane. The ratio of product water to waste water is typically about 1:2 or 1:4; for every 1 gallon of RO water produced, the waste water is 2 gallons or 4 gallons.

The flow restrictor is installed on the waste water line out of the membrane. Its purpose is to work with the Reverse Osmosis membrane to maintain the perfect ratio of water flow to the drain and filtered water production flow. When waste water jams into the restrictor, there will be no waste water outflow, which can cause RO membrane plugging. Conversely, when the waste water flow is too big, the flow restrictor cannot produce drinking water effectively.
